Frequently Asked Questions
We want our milks to be creamy and slightly sweet without having to add gums or sweeteners. Adding oats achieves both of these things in the most natural way possible. For those who prefer a straight almond, we recently launched a delicious Unsweetened Almond milk that is oat-free!
Yes, we use only certified gluten-free oats in our products.
Our oat milk is made in our factory with an allergen management program in place. Our cleaning programs have been validated and are verified daily to ensure no allergen cross-contamination occurs. Our facility currently handles tree nuts and gluten.
Yes, our nuts are sourced from various areas within Southern Africa. Our almonds are from the Klein Karoo, and our macadamias from Mpumalanga. Our cashew nuts are from Mozambique.
Dipotassium phosphate is a water-soluble mineral salt and source of potassium. Its main role is to control the pH of the milk, keeping it stable and creamy. Calcium carbonate is a mineral compound added as a source of calcium to build and protect your bones.
We add canola oil to our oat milk to match the fat content and creamy richness of whole milk. We chose canola oil because it is locally sourced, GMO-free, has a neutral flavour, and is high in monounsaturated fat.
Our almond milk actually has more almonds than most brands on the market, which are around 2%. After many trials, we found that 3% almonds in our Almond with Oat recipe yielded the best results in terms of mouth-feel and flavour. Our Unsweetened Almond Milk contains 4% almonds, which is double the amount in most brands.
There are no added sugars in our milks; the sweetness comes from the oats. During processing, natural enzymes break down the oat starch into smaller components, namely maltose and glucose.
Yes, all our milks make a beautiful froth and are delicious in coffee and tea. That said, they’re not great with very acidic beans, where there may be some separation.
The milk has a shelf life of 12 months, unopened. Once opened, refrigerate and consume within 5 days.
Tetra Pak’s aseptic filling technology combined with innovative packaging keeps our milks safe and flavourful for 12 months.
After exploring all available options for increasing our milk production, we are convinced that a state-of-the-art Tetra Pak filling line and aseptic Tetra Pak packaging is the best solution for both product quality and sustainability. Aseptic packaging protects our milk and retains its colour, texture, natural taste, and nutritional value without the need for preservatives or refrigeration. Our milks now have a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to our old bottles:
- 40% less energy consumed to produce a litre of milk
- 20x fewer trucks on the road in getting packaging to our factory
- 50% less water during the cleaning of our equipment.
Yes, the cartons are recyclable. However, they are not yet as widely recycled as our HDPE bottles were. Currently, there are 220 buy-back centres accepting cartons in South Africa. ButtaNutt, alongside Tetra Pak, partners with Petco in their commitment to improving carton recycling.
